The Scripps Campus is the stunning result of a happy marriage between natural beauty and expressive architecture, touched by 80 years of history. It fulfills Ellen Browning Scripps’ dream of “a college campus whose simplicity and beauty will unobtrusively seep into a student’s consciousness and quietly develop a standard of taste and judgment.”

Architecture and Grounds

There is an artistic connection between buildings and landscape. In our lush garden setting, the structures have been oriented to create both majestic vistas and intimate outdoor spaces, including 26 courtyards and 18 bubbling fountains. Plants often take a starring role, whether a collection of Native Mexican plants adorning a courtyard or a stately line of elm trees creating a canopy of green. Fruit trees abound, including orange, grapefruit, pomegranate, kumquat, and loquat. Scents of orange blossoms and wisteria perfume the campus in early spring.

With their red clay rooftops and distinctive chimneypots, many buildings feature Spanish Mediterranean style. They were constructed between 1929 and 2008—the Sallie Tiernan Field House being our newest addition. Along with a large swimming pool and sports fields, the new structure features an aerobics studio, cardio machine room, weight room, and other spaces for fitness and health education. As a student, you can enjoy these indoor and outdoor spaces as you study, brainstorm, socialize, or simply relax and soak up the sun.
