Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Varsity Athletics

Athena was the Greek goddess of war, wisdom, strength and strategy. These attributes are demonstrated regularly by our Athenas, the joint athletic women’s team of Scripps, Claremont McKenna, and Harvey Mudd Colleges. The Athenas have won 55 SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) titles, ranking them second among SCIAC schools. The men’s joint team is called the Stags. Our athletic team competes in the NCAA Division III, and is the only one in our conference to win a title in all 19 sports at least twice. Learn more on the CMS Athletics website.

Club and Intramural Sports

If you’re seeking something less formal, try a club or intramural sport. You can choose from crew, cycling, field hockey, rugby, Ultimate Frisbee, badminton, inner tube water polo, and flag football. In addition, the Claremont Equestrian Team, a five-college team of both competitive and recreational riders, competes in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association against teams from all over Southern California and Arizona. Students can also participate in the Claremont Colleges Ballroom Dance Company (CCBDC), one of the most successful dancesport ensembles in the country.

Facilities and Classes

With a sparkling 25-meter swimming pool, soccer/lacrosse fields and workout equipment designed specifically with a woman’s body in mind, our students have access to state-of-the-art facilities. Additionally, the Sallie Tiernan Field House offers yoga, Pilates, kickboxing, hip-hop dance, and weightlifting classes to Scripps students.

If you’d like to try your hand at a new sport, each semester the Claremont Colleges offer a variety of physical education classes, including martial arts, dance, yoga, fly-fishing, surfing, and many more.

Outdoor Sports

Here in Claremont, our weather is conducive to outdoor sports all year long. The ocean, the mountains, and the desert are within one hour’s drive. The combination of these three environments offers unparalleled opportunities for outdoor sports, and Scripps offers a menu of outdoor clubs, including the Outdoor Women’s Leadership and On the Loose activity programs, the Claremont Colleges Ski Club, the Harvey Mudd Sailing Club, the Claremont Colleges Cycling Club.
